A giant illuminated flag transforms an engineering icon
As a photographer, Hoover Dam has always been a bit of a challenge. It's undeniably one of the greatest engineering achievements in the American Southwest, but from a photography perspective, it's often just a massive wall of gray concrete. This summer, that changed. To celebrate America's 250th anniversary, a temporary installation transformed the face of the dam with a giant American flag measuring 300 feet wide by 150 feet tall, illuminated nightly by more than 550 LED lights powered by the dam itself. Suddenly, one of the Southwest's most iconic landmarks had a completely different personality.
The display created opportunities from nearly every angle. From the Mike O'Callaghan Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, the enormous flag filled the dam wall and emphasized the incredible scale of Hoover Dam. Walking across the dam offered a completely different perspective, allowing me to photograph the Art Deco architecture, intake towers, and the lighting installation up close while appreciating the engineering that made the project possible nearly ninety years ago.
One of my favorite photographs from the evening came after the sun had set. Using a long exposure, I captured the steady flow of vehicles winding down towards the dam at a 180 road. The red taillights and blue-tinted headlights naturally formed light trails that perfectly complemented the red, white, and blue display. It was one of those rare moments where everything came together, turning an already impressive landmark into a scene that felt both dynamic and thoughtfully designed for photography.
The America250 installation was temporary, but it demonstrated how creative lighting can completely transform a familiar landmark. Hoover Dam remains one of the Southwest's most remarkable engineering accomplishments, and for a few weeks this summer, it also became one of its most photogenic.
