Fruit Smashing

Creative Project

A Fun Timing Game

Similar to photographing drops of water, capturing the implosion of fruit as it hits the ground is even more difficult. This is mostly because you have many less opportunities to get it right. With water, you can keep the faucet dripping for hours. But in the case of fruit you only have so much fruit to sacrifice.

I ended up photographing this at night, which at first was a concern but with a flash attachment and some lights it was no problem. The biggest problem I had, other than timing the taking of the photo with the landing of the fruit, was keeping the fruit in focus. I found that even though I managed to capture the fruit hitting the ground perfectly, it was both slightly out of focus and off center. The trick is practice practice practice, and buy lots of fruit. We dropped the fruit off of a roof, one story up. Had I the opportunity I would drop the fruit off of an even higher location, but that's the best we had. The apples, for example, sometimes two times to successfully break into pieces. Get out there and try it for yourself!
