Best Courthouses of America
From Midwest to West Coast
As a photographer born and raised in Indiana for the first 34 years of my life, I spent a lot of time capturing different courthouses in the Midwest - from big cities like Indianapolis to small towns like Napoleon, OH.
Now that I have moved out West to Nevada, I have found myself missing the older styles of courthouses that the midwest has. So, in homage to Indiana - I want to showcase my TOP 16 courthouses I have captured over my lifetime. Most are in Indiana, with a few that managed to make the list in Ohio, Oregon, and California.
Which courthouse is your favorite? Here they are, in non-biased alphabetical order:
Having worked with the ACD Festival over the years, this top-down shot showcasing the iconic vintage cars is my favorite of this courthouse. FUN FACT: This courthouse oversees Auburn's historic ACD Festival, celebrating the area's automotive heritage every Labor Day weekend. This courthouse is surrounded by a huge variety of international restaurants, great for foodies! FUN FACT: The Monroe County Courthouse, located in Bloomington, is known for its striking limestone architecture, reflective of the region's rich limestone quarries. I absolutely LOVE this graffiti alley that lines up right with this courthouse. That alone makes it one of my favorites. FUN FACT: This courthouse is celebrated for its ornate interior, which includes beautifully preserved woodwork and a classic rotunda. I love a courthouse located in the heart of the city and surrounded by skyscrapers. This location is also right along the river. Bonus points for getting here at sunrise! FUN FACT: The Franklin County Courthouse features a blend of contemporary and classic design, symbolizing Columbus' rich history and modern growth. Near Napoleon, another great and detailed courthouse. FUN FACT: Known for its stately presence and the large clock tower that dominates the city's skyline. My hometown, I have hundreds of photos of this courthouse. However, this particular image is the same composition of my very first renowned aerial image - and marks the beginning of my aerial photography journey. FUN FACT: The Allen County Courthouse is a National Historic Landmark, recognized for its exquisite Beaux-Arts architecture. This one stands out from the rest with its red facade. FUN FACT: Notable for its distinctive red brick facade, the Elkhart County Courthouse is a centerpiece in the historic district of Goshen. A classic small town with train tracks going right by the courthouse. FUN FACT: This courthouse is known for its historic bell tower, which has been a staple of the city's skyline since the 19th century. Being the largest city by Fort Wayne, I found myself here often enough and enjoyed capturing aerial images of this courthouse at night, sunrise, sunset, and daytime. FUN FACT: The Marion County Courthouse is located in the heart of Indianapolis and is known for its pivotal role in the development of the city’s legal landscape. A very small town with a very detailed courthouse, stunning! FUN FACT: This courthouse is celebrated for its classical revival architecture and the beautifully maintained courthouse square. Located on top of a very steep hill, this one is positioned nicely to show off the surrounding skyline. FUN FACT: The Nashville Courthouse is known for its modernistic style and serves as a major hub of civic activity. Here we go, a WEST coast courthouse. This one in particular is one of the few I have visited out west that still has that classic old style. I absolutely love the sign out front pointing in all directions. FUN FACT: Famous for its unique Victorian Gothic architecture, this courthouse stands as a monument to Indiana's rich judicial history. My only other western courthouse on the list, this one on Lake Merritt is particularly unique in being square-shaped. FUN FACT: San Francisco’s courthouse is renowned for its innovative architecture and being an integral part of the city's recovery efforts post-earthquake. Simple and classic, with a beautiful red roof! FUN FACT: The St. Joseph County Courthouse, with its grand facade, is a fine example of neoclassical architecture in northern Indiana. A town with not a whole lot going on (sorry, not sorry), but it does have a GREEN ROOFED courthouse which is the only one I’ve seen like that. FUN FACT: The Lucas County Courthouse is noted for its grandeur and intricate stonework, making it one of the architectural gems of Toledo. Last, but not least, beautiful from above as it showcases the nearby lakes. FUN FACT: The Kosciusko County Courthouse, built in 1882, is known for its classic architecture and the historic events it has witnessed.
