Photographer's Guide to Nashville, Tennessee

Top 7 Places to Explore in Music City

I finally made my way south to Nashville, Tennessee to explore their beautiful riverfront downtown and iconic Broadway Street. If you’re a photographer looking for the best spots to be for the best shots, you’re in the right place! I’ve done the grind so that you don’t have to. Here are my seven favorite spots in the city to explore and general tips for getting the best results.

Bonus Tip - Having a drone is always great for getting a unique perspective. My handy DJI Mavic 3 has served me extremely well for over a year now. Having sensors in every direction for obstacle avoidance is GAME changing, as well as stunning Hasselblad camera and secondary 7x zoom lens. Be sure to follow all City, State, and Federal regulations.

If you are NOT a photographer but are here for something like the Killer Nashville writers convention (like my wife was), scroll to the end for great restaurant tips!

Spot #1 - John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge

Spot #1 - John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge

After being here a few days, I had some time to kill and did even MORE research on what was around. The Train Trestle in this background was on my list already, hoping to catch a train using the DJI Mavic 3’s 7x lens and showing the downtown in the background with lens compression. But, I was happily surprised exploring Google Maps to see a LIGHTHOUSE here. That was when the challenge of GETTING this photo began. Not gonna lie, this shot took some work.

Now, you could just be a normal person. You could just walk the Shelby Bottoms Greenway trail that goes along the river and gives you a view of the lighthouse. But I don’t do normal. I wanted a much closer drone shot. The problem - regulations, regulations, regulations! For starters, you can’t commercially fly from the city parks. So, that ruled out flying from the north side of the river. Second, the nearby airport meant a height restriction of just 100 feet! Third, and as a general rule, you need to maintain line-of-sight with your drone.

Where did that lead me? Finding the closest riverfront spot on the south side of the river that had a view. This led to me making a friendly call to Clark Crane. They were very accommodating and let me onto their private property, which goes right up to the lighthouse. It was a bit of a drop but I didn't need to get there, just to see it and fly my drone there.

All in all I think it was 110% worth the effort, capturing a very unique and one-of-a-kind shot of this beautiful lighthouse in the middle of the Cumberland River.

Spot #2 - Nissan Stadium

Spot #2 - Nissan Stadium

If you followed my advice from spot #1, you are already RIGHT here. A drone is super handy of course to showcase the view of this stadium with downtown Nashville. Otherwise, look at their schedule of events to find a time to come inside.

Spot #3 - Broadway Street

Spot #3 - Broadway Street

I am not sure anything gets more iconic in Nashville than Broadway Street! I do not recommend trying to park or drive through here in the evening, as it is just pure chaos. But, if you use walking bridge from spot #1, then you can happily parade these streets and capture photos of all the neon lights, take in live music from nearly every building you pass, and watch everyone stuck in traffic.

Spot #4 - Printers Alley

Spot #4 - Printers Alley

Ok, we’ve hit the SUPER obvious spots you probably already knew about. Printers Alley is more in the heart of the downtown skyscrapers. In fact, I quite enjoy the walk from Broadway Street over to here. This is like a miniature version of Broadway Street, being of course IN an alley and filled with little restaurants. Still, you get that NEON light experience and the entire alley goes a fair bit in both directions. Another great night spot.

Spot #5 - Tennessee State Capitol

Spot #5 - Tennessee State Capitol

As a drone stock photographer, I don’t leave a city without capturing their courthouse or capitol building, and Nashville was no exception! I love when a government building like this has the downtown surrounding it so perfectly. It is also a great building to walk around, as it is raised up over Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park. You are also not far off from the Nashville Sounds baseball stadium.

Spot #6 - Gaylord Opryland Resort

Spot #6 - Gaylord Opryland Resort

This place takes me back, as I remember being here as a kid during a childhood vacation! It was fun seeing it fresh as an adult. This place is certainly an experience to walk through, with an aggressive tropical theme and waterfalls that remind me of being back in the Bahamas! Parking was a bit expensive at about $30 for a couple of hours. But this is a GREAT spot to kill a very HOT afternoon away from the heat.

Spot #7 - Omohundro Waterworks Light

What about FOOD!?!?

I hope you enjoy exploring Nashville, whether it is crossing the pedestrian bridge through Broadway Street to Printers Alley or hunting down an obscure lighthouse. Comment below if you have any favorite photo spots!

I’ll leave you with some BONUS TIPS on FOOD. I am not going to lie, the Nashville Hot Chicken restaurant I recommend below is a place I have craved constantly since having it.

Hattie Bs Hot Chicken

Hattie Bs Hot Chicken

I have to start with the #1 place we ate at, so good we ate here TWICE. This place is serving the crispiest, largest, juiciest chicken tenders. Whether you want it plain or all the way three levels PAST HOT to ‘Shut the Cluck Up’, there is a SPICE level for ANYONE. My wife dared the hottest one and did make it out alive. I was very happy at Medium. What I’ll say is that it is such a delicious spice, not just heat for heats sake. So, not only was the chicken itself done perfectly, the spice itself makes you crave it. To TOP it off - ALL of their sides AND Sweet Tea were perfection. A perfect meal!

Biscuit Love

Very delicious ‘Bonuts’ (biscuits + donuts), candy bacon, and fruit tea. This place FEELS fancy and expensive without actually being expensive.

The Grilled Cheeserie

The Grilled Cheeserie

A proper grilled cheese restaurant, with our favorite being the birria grilled cheese.

East Side Banh Mi

East Side Banh Mi

I stand by the Banh Mi being the BEST sandwich. This place is doing it top notch, literally baking french baguettes FRESH for you. But the secret delicacy was their Vietnamese Garlic Bread. So buttery and garlicky and perfect. I was also surprised by their Rice Peanut Milk (it’s like a horchata but with peanut butter flavor instead of cinnamon).

I could honestly keep going, from a delicious Seattle Hotdog from Daddy’s Dog to great BBQ at Shotgun Willie’s Tex BBQ to a fabulous cronut at Five Daughters Bakery. But this was a PHOTOGRAPHER’S post, not a food post….I think. Ok, I’m hungry so I’m going to go now.
